My ‘real’ friends are completely retarded when it comes to the web in general.

Sure they use the internet everyday, at work, and occassionally at home, but not nearly to the degree we do.

They have no idea what Tumblr is, what Twitter is, who Julia Allison is, who Nick Denton is, or countless other things we take for granted. The depth of their social networking is connecting with the same people they already know in real life, on Facebook.

I have pretty much two sets of friends, the ones I know ‘off-line’ and the ones i’ve made from my participating in communities like this. I haven’t really gone and become friends in real life with too many of the people I have met online, but I am looking forward to meeting some of the great people I have met here on Tumblr.

Am I the only person who has friends who are so isolated from this world that we know so well?

I have the same experience. I have a few people who I would call friends who I initially made on-line, via discussion forums (hi Dr Dave! Hi Geoff!) and I have a few friends who are techy and geeky enough to blog, who read my blog(s) (Hi Ricky!), but mostly there are two spheres and never the twain shall meet.
